"We may be fairly happy now, but there’s always tomorrow and the prospect of a happier place, a happier life. So all options are left on the table. We never fully commit. That is, I think, a dangerous thing. We can’t love a place, or a person, if we always have one foot out the door."

Eric Weiner in “Chapter 10: America - Happiness is Home” in The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places in the World.

Weiner is commenting on “the problem…with many of us Americans and our perpetual pursuit of happiness.” He mentions that America is an optimistic nation, and because of this, we are transient - always searching for something else that will make us happy.

I find this generalization to be true in my case - I am optimistic, I think that there is something, some place, better than where I am now, and have one foot out the door in life and in love.

A few years ago, I was fully committed to Boston. My disposition changed and I was in a rut and didn’t know the “right” thing to do. The three weeks abroad observing different countries’ cultures has tapped into this urge to travel. I’ve suppressed it for years because I didn’t have a purpose - a job, an internship - but the more I think about it (I know, the irony of thinking too much!), the more I know that this is what I need to do for me and my pursuit of happiness.

Thank you, Eric Weiner, for an entertaining and educational read. : )

"we choose the path we take. but sometimes that path can change. the east becomes the west; the north becomes the south. the normal becomes the abnormal; the fantasy becomes reality. but other times, the path chooses us, and we have no way to fight it but to go along with the adventure."

"no matter how much we run, our heart stays with us. no matter how much we deny, our desires grow deeper. no matter how much we sacrifice, our souls will never be satisfied until we find….love. and love finds us in return. sometimes, however, for the good of the group, no matter how much we love, we must deny it. and accept that our duty is to feel nothing at all."

the lxd, episode 6: “the duet”

just watched all seven episodes. it is truly amazing.
